Shut The Box
Shut the box : a tool for learning mathematics
The wooden logic game Shut the box by Goki is a game of luck supporting the learning of additions. The winner is the one who succeeds in knocking down all the numbers from his playing surface or having as few numbers as possible, because they are at the very end counted. Shuffle the dice and the sum of those dice should match the combination of numbers you are going to lower. Several choices are often possible, so we must think carefully about our choice! In addition to working on basic addition calculations, skills such as logic and problem solving are developed.
An easy-to-play board game
Sitting across from each other, the players receive two dice each and shuffle them at the same time. We always play with both dice. The numbers displayed by the two dice are added together and then the available combination of numbers is folded down. For example, if a player brews a 3 and a 6 in the first round, he has five possible combinations to cast off.
- He can simply fold down the 9.
- He can fold the 8 and the 1.
- He can fold the 7 and the 2.
- He can fold the 6 and the 3.
- He can fold the 5 and the 4.
The sum displayed by the dice therefore corresponds at all times to the sum of the numbers that will be folded down. What tactical choice to make? Therein lies the whole challenge of Shut the box.
