1 years and +

Sensory Shapes (or sensory forms in French) is an awakening and embedding game from the collectionPetilou by Le Toy Van. It contains a tray hollowed out of shapes, and wooden blocks to insert into it. Each of the blocks has a specific shape, color and function.

  • The light green circle makes a clicking noise when twisting its two parts.
  • The light blue star has a small mirror.
  • The red square has two windows that allow you to see (and hear) medium-sized multicolored marbles.
  • The yellow triangle has a small raised fabric bump.
  • The turquoise diamond has 2 windows that allow you to see (and hear) small multicolored balls.
  • The purple hexagon makes noise when its button is pressed.
  • The orange octagon serves as a kaleidoscope.
  • The green flower contains a bell.
  • The pink oval has a velor bump to touch.

Educational quality

An early learning game is also, and above all, a learning game! Here is an overview of the skills developed with thisSensory Shapes :

  • The fine motor skills : the baby catches the pieces, manipulates them, coordinates his gestures to produce sounds, observes the beads that move, etc.
  • The reflection : the baby learns which part should be placed in the hollow of which location. If he's wrong, the block won't fit. The child must therefore try his luck elsewhere. He proceeds by trial and error before achieving his ends and thus takes his first steps in problem solving.
  • The visual analysis : after testing it, the child understands that a shape corresponds to a specific place. This understanding of forms comes from repeated observations, analyzes and comparisons.
  • The understanding the cause and effect relationship » . Example: When I turn this part, it makes a noise. The baby understands that he is the actor in what is happening.
  • The to touch , the hearing , the view (depending on the rooms explored): the baby focuses on his senses. As he explores, he feels and understands that sounds and colors are different, that some textures are more pleasant to the touch than others, etc.
  • The color learning (related to the development of sight): the baby observes the colors and distinguishes them little by little. Gradually, he makes the differences, even though he cannot name the colors yet.
