Spring Color Hunt: A simple, free, and educational activity
The nice weather is slowly starting to arrive… and with it, the desire to go outside as a family ☀️
If you are looking for a simple, low-prep, and truly fun activity for kids, this one is likely to become a new classic in your home: the spring color hunt.
A free, educational activity that is perfect for moving around, observing, and enjoying nature 🌿
Why do a color hunt with kids?
Nature activities are ideal for stimulating children's curiosity while allowing them to move and explore at their own pace.
The color hunt is particularly interesting because it:
- develops observation skills
- stimulates creativity
- encourages active outdoor play
- fosters quality family time
And above all… it is extremely simple to set up.
Materials needed
For this activity, you only need 3 things:
- An empty egg carton
- Paint
- A paintbrush
Preparing the activity
Before going out, take a few minutes to prepare your color hunt tool.
Paint a different color in each of the 12 compartments of the egg carton.
It doesn't need to be perfect; the goal is simply to create a visual reference for the kids.
Once finished… you are all set!
How to do the color hunt
Head outside 🌸
The concept is simple:
kids must find items in nature that match the colors in their carton.
For example:
- a yellow flower
- a green leaf
- a small grey pebble
- a brown piece of wood
They can place their findings directly into the matching compartments.
It is a playful, educational, and calming activity, perfect for slowing down and enjoying the moment.
An activity that evolves with the seasons
What we particularly love about this activity is that it doesn't have to be a one-time thing.
In spring, we discover the first flowers and soft colors.
In summer, colors become more vivid and varied.
In autumn, we explore warm tones and colorful leaves.
The same game… but always different 💛
A simple idea to create quality moments
You don't need to do a lot to create beautiful memories.
A simple activity, a little bit of nature, and time together… that is often all it takes.
And honestly, kids love it ✨
Thanks to Doriane from Les pays des merveilles for the wonderful idea.
