Meilleurs casse-têtes pour enfants : comment choisir selon l’âge (+ idées cadeaux)

Best puzzles for children: how to choose according to age (+ gift ideas)

Puzzles: a classic that transcends time

If there's one game that never goes out of style in homes, it's the puzzle ! Whether for toddlers or older children, this universal game has a magical power: it soothes, stimulates, and brings people together. Besides being a calm, screen-free activity (hooray!), it develops a host of essential skills in children: fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, patience, shape and color recognition , not to mention problem-solving . In short, a simple activity, but oh so beneficial!

How to choose the right puzzle?

You might think that you just have to look at the number of pieces… but there’s a bit more to it than that! 😉 The shape and size of the pieces , the complexity of the image , the contrast of the colors and the composition of the puzzle greatly influence the level of difficulty.

And every child is unique; some will want to push their limits, while others will prefer to stay in their comfort zone. The most important thing? That they enjoy it! 💛

Here are some guidelines suggested by Naître et Grandir:

  • 0 to 2 years : nesting games are perfect for starting out.

  • 2 to 3 years : approximately 4 pieces.

  • 3 to 4 years : 6 to 10 pieces.

  • 4 to 5 years : 10 to 15 pieces.

  • 5 to 6 years old : 15 to 20 pieces.

  • Ages 7 and up : 50 to 250 pieces.

A quick reminder: the ages indicated on the boxes are often related to safety standards (small parts = choking hazard) rather than the child's actual ability. Trust your parental instincts.

How can we encourage children to do it?

Some children love puzzles from the very first piece, others… not so much! Don't panic, there are several ways to spark their interest:

  • Start small. Fewer pieces = more successes = more fun!

  • Choose a theme that fascinates him. Animals, vehicles, dinosaurs, space… Let the child guide the choice.

  • Make the experience fun. Try a puzzle that glows in the dark, transforms into a seek-and-find, or introduces new concepts.

  • Do it together. There's nothing like a moment of family bonding, room by room.
